2016  JULIE  JONES: ART WORKS PAST, CURRENT AND FUTURE

    STATEMENT

The majority of my artwork is produced from the outcomes of performances.  I work with staged scenarios, presenting myself as the artifact through live or video performance.  Through a series of performative acts that are documented with video I extract many small moments that are able to generate different ways to communicate a 'story'. In an attempt to explore notions of the real and imaginary these personal narratives waver between reality and fiction.

I am strongly influenced by the aesthetic of film noir and its origins from the post war lost innocence and desperate desire, and the inherent theatrical qualities and German expressionism.  It is a driving factor for further experimentation of editing methods and techniques in magnifying and exagerating cinematic narrative.

'Motel' is a performance-like video and text that seeks to set a scene for a story. Saturation of colour is drained to near monochrome with blurred edges allowing a degree of interpretation of era, time and space.  Dim flickering light emphasizes the affect of anxiety, questioning if something has happened or is about to take place...

The 'Chandelier' animation work is derived from video stills of 'performing acts'. These are small observational moments.  The ritualistic behaviour of the woman with a chandelier and actions suggest a person who has a hard time finding their place in the world.  Contradictions of success and meaninglessness are symbolised through the chandelier.  The drawings are made with a sense of naivete that references traditional drawn images which are then used for stop animation.

The influence of memory and experience are possibly the most important requirements for art making.  My work incorporates personal experiences, memories and associated emotions, particularly in performnace.  The use of my body as an instrument of comminucation through performance art is pivotal.
